LOCATION: Crooked Corners Cabin on the CHS Campus
COST: Free and open to the public
Developed by the NC State Archive's America 250 celebration, this traveling exhibit tells the stories of seven everyday North Carolinians and extraordinary leaders — Gertrude Weil, Henry Owl, Joe Lewis, Abraham Galloway, Ronald Mace, James Hunter, and Willa Player — who petitioned, protested, and organized to expand democracy. The exhibit explores change, freedom, civic responsibility, and overcoming challenges by telling the story of a few North Carolinians who have raised their voices to call out injustice and fully participate in our democratic society.

Whether you’ve called North Carolina home your whole life or are a recent addition to its vibrant landscape, you make our great state what it is. Join us as we commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 by better understanding North Carolina’s history and working together to shape our future in a way that builds on our unique contributions and collective strengths.
The When Are We US? exhibit is a thought-provoking approach to commemorating the US 250th anniversary that delves into the history of immigration, integration, fundamental rights, emancipation, and voting in North Carolina. This exhibit, funded by the National Historical Publications & Records Commission, features North Carolina stories through select documents, images, and recordings found in repositories across the state and beyond.
