“Monticello: Sharing History for a Century”, with Brandon Dillard

Brandon Dillard is Director of Historic Interpretation and Audience Engagement at Monticello, the historic plantation of Thomas Jefferson in central Virginia. Dillard, an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, has spent much of his career focused on the intersections of public memory, race, and identity. At Monticello, he leads interpretation efforts across all content producing departments, encouraging consistency in institutional messaging and training interpretive methodologies. An interdisciplinary scholar with degrees in philosophy (Georgia State University ‘07) and cultural anthropology (University of Virginia ’18), he is currently a PhD student in American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. With a previous twenty-year career in food and beverage focused on customer service, Dillard is dedicated to engaging audiences in a welcoming environment and inspiring discussion across differences about complex histories.
