Airing of the Quilts

  • Cashiers Historical Society 1940 North Carolina 107 Cashiers, NC, 28717 United States (map)

5th Annual Airing of the Quilts… it’s an Appalachian Mountain springtime tradition!

From a bitter cold winter to sunshine and warmer temperatures, Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and freshen up & air out quilts for next winter.

Airing of the Quilts event is a celebration of the material culture and history of the Cashiers Valley area. The Appalachian tradition, “Airing of the Quilts,” marks the arrival of spring, when families hang quilts outdoors to freshen them after a long winter. More than a practical task, it’s a cultural celebration — an opportunity to showcase handcrafted quilts and honor a rich heritage. In Appalachia, quilts represent more than warmth; they reflect the region’s creativity, resourcefulness, and storytelling. They symbolize family, community, and the enduring strength of Appalachian women.

During this event, local quilters will proudly display their beautiful creations throughout our campus. Guests are invited to stroll the grounds, explore our historic buildings, and engage with a variety of skilled Appalachian artisans as they demonstrate traditional crafts and showcase their handmade works. This year,  artisan demonstrations will include blacksmithing, glass blowing, weaving, woodworking, wool spinning, and more! Kids and adults will enjoy the opportunity to pain their own barn quilt squares. 19th century lawn games will take place on our campus grounds. Enjoy live music by local bands including Owen Grooms, Young Mountain Magic, and Creekwater Collective in the perfect musical setting for a day steeped in heritage and craftsmanship!

This event is free & open to the public. Pack a picnic lunch, bring a blanket, and join us for a full day of Appalachian culture!
